James Toback and Harvey Weinstein Under Investigation by Beverly Hills Police

Harvey Weinstein and director James Toback are both under investigation by the Beverly Hills police department following complaints from multiple people, police said.

Neither the nature of the complaints nor the number of complainants are known. “These cases are currently under investigation and no further information will be released at this time,” police said in a statement provided to TheWrap.

The department said on Oct. 12 that it had not launched an investigation into Weinstein, saying that “no one has come forward with a complaint.” However, several of Weinstein’s accusers described incidents said to have taken place at the Peninsula Hotel in Beverly Hills.

Weinstein’s position of power and influence in Hollywood was shattered by an Oct. 5 New York Times report detailing a lengthy history of sexual assault and harassment accusations, and substantial settlements Weinstein paid to women who accused him. It was followed five days later by a New Yorker expose written by Ronan Farrow detailing even more allegations. At least 75 women have accused Weinstein of sexual harassment, and 11 women have accused him of rape, including Rose McGowan, Asia Argento, and Annabella Sciorra.

The Weinstein report inspired a wave of women, and some men, to come forward with accusations of sexual harassment against other powerful men in Hollywood, including Toback, the subject of an Oct. 22 Los Angeles Times report detailing more than 30 accusations of harassment and assault.

Representatives for Toback and Weinstein did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the investigations.
