Donald Trump is “officially the drunk guy at the end of the bar” after his various tirades about NFL players who kneel during the national anthem, Bill Maher says.
The “Real Time” host kicked off Friday night’s episode on the topic of Trump’s outrage over protests by players such as Colin Kaepernick, fretting that “the stupidest a–hole alive says something stupid every three days, and we have to debate it.”
The president stirred up a national shouting match one week ago when he used his appearance at a rally for failed Senate candidate Luther Strange to demand that NFL owners fire players who kneel during the anthem to protest police brutality against African-Americans. Or as he put it, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say ‘get that son of a b—h off the field’ right now, out! He’s fired?’”
Trump’s speech provoked a wave of protests during NFL games held the weekend after his speech, and he was still fuming about the issue late into this week. Maher said Trump expended more energy talking about NFL players than he did about the still-unfolding crisis in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria.
“Let’s tell Trump there are lots of black people kneeling in Puerto Rico,” Maher said. “Get him focused on that.”
“He’ll be mad when he finds out they speak Spanish and can come here whenever they like,” Maher added.
Maher also took swipes at the scandal over private plane use that led to HHS Secretary Tom Price’s resignation on Friday, saying that Trump’s “gonna go to Puerto Rico as soon as someone from his cabinet frees up a plane.”
