On “The Late Show” Tuesday night, Stephen Colbert opened his monologue with the topic of the day — Donald Trump’s rambling rally for Ted Cruz in which he said a lot of things that troubled a lot of people.
“He was in Houston to support senator Ted Cruz. So of course, he talked about himself,” Colbert said.
Then, in standard fashion, “The Late Show” played a series of Trump clips from the rally, with Colbert providing commentary.
Trump: “You know, they have a word, it sort of became old fashioned. It’s called a nationalist. And I say, really, we’re not supposed to use that word. You know what I am? I’m a nationalist, okay? I’m a nationalist. Nationalist.”
“You know why you’re not supposed to use that word?” Colbert chimed in. “Because it’s the second half of ‘white nationalist.’ Chopping off the first word doesn’t change what it means in our minds. ‘Oh, look, look, I’m in a Klux Klan. I have no idea which one. Don’t judge me. There’s all kinds of Klux Klans. Blue Klux Klan. Who knows?’ Trump went on.”
Next up was Trump complaining about globalism.
Trump: “You know what a globalist is, right? You know what a globalist is. A globalist is a person that wants the globe to do well. Frankly, not caring about our country so much. And you know what? We can’t have that.”
“He does realize America is on the globe, right?” Colbert wondered. ” ‘Look, who cares, look, I’m going to shoot you straight. Who cares about global warming? Wake me up when it’s America warming.’ “
And, of course, Colbert had to say some stuff about Trump’s continued whining about the refugee caravan in Central America that has had conservatives in a tizzy lately.
“Of course, Trump used last night’s rally to bring up his favorite pre-midterms talking point: a group of Central American migrants fleeing north to safety — a.k.a. ‘the caravan.’ Last night, Trump, ever the uberfan, has made up caravan’s origin story fan fiction,” Colbert said.
Trump: “What’s happening right now is a large group of people. They call it a caravan. You know how the caravan started? Does everybody know what this means, huh?”
“No. I don’t know what this means,” Colbert said, referring to the odd hand motion Trump made during this part of the speech. “Are you feeding chickens? Are you dealing blackjack? Oh, I know. You’re spreading bulls—.”
