“La La Land,” “Hidden Figures” and “Doctor Strange” have won the feature film awards from the Costume Designers Guild, which were handed out on Tuesday night in Beverly Hills, California.
“La La Land” won in the Excellence in Contemporary Film category, while “Hidden Figures” won in Excellence in Period Film and “Doctor Strange” won in Excellence in Fantasy Film.
“La La Land” is the only CDG winner also nominated for the costume-design Oscar, along with “Allied,” “Jackie,” “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and “Florence Foster Jenkins.”
The CDG results did little to clarify a competitive Oscar race in the category, because no winner in the guild’s contemporary category — the category that “La La Land” won — has ever gone on to win the costume design Oscar.
Costume Designers Guild winners from the period category win the Oscar for costume design about half the time, and winners from the fantasy category have won once in recent years. (“Alice in Wonderland” did it in 2011.) But this year’s CDG winners in those categories, “Hidden Figures” and “Doctor Strange,” aren’t even in the running at the Oscars.
The television awards went to “Game of Thrones” for a fantasy series, “The Crown” for a period series and “American Horror Story: Roanoke” for a contemporary series.
Mandy Moore hosted the show, which took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Jeffrey Kurland won the Costume Designers Guild’s Career Achievement Award.
