The West Hollywood City Council voted Monday night on a proposal calling on the removal of President Trump’s star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The resolution urges the City of Los Angeles and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which oversees the iconic landmark, to remove the star “due to [Trump’s] disturbing treatment of women and other actions.”
“The West Hollywood City Council did not pass the resolution because Donald Trump is a conservative or a Republican,” West Hollywood Mayor Pro Tem John D’Amico told TheWrap. “Earning a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is an honor. When one belittles and attacks minorities, immigrants, people with disabilities or women — the honor no longer exists.”
Trump’s star, located on Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue, has been vandalized several times since the beginning of the 2016 presidential campaign. Last month, it was demolished with a pickax by Austin Mikel Clay. In October 2016, James Otis took a sledgehammer to the star, and earlier that year it was spray-painted with a Nazi Swastika.
Monday’s staff report also urges the city of and the Chamber of Commerce to revisit qualifications for being included in the Walk of Fame, which features 2,500 stars.
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has said in the past that it does not remove stars once they are given, and told TheWrap Monday that there are no plans for removal of any stars “as of now.”
“Once we receive a communication from the City of West Hollywood, it will be referred to our Executive Committee for consideration at their next meeting,” Leron Gubler, President/CEO Hollywood Chamber of Commerce said. “As of now, there are no plans to remove any stars from the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The West Hollywood City Council does not have jurisdiction over the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”
However, the West Hollywood City Council argues in their resolution that the Walk of Fame is still the “property of the City of Los Angeles” and that the city has the “ultimate responsibility for the condition and maintenance of the Walk of Fame.”
